I recently wrote an article for Westminster Magazine called “If God Has Spoken.” The premise is easy to understand, though hard to grasp, and perhaps harder to work out in daily details. But that doesn’t change the truth. The deepest questions we have about who we are, why we’re here, and where we’re going have answers . . . and that’s because God has spoken. God’s speech isn’t just a benefit or a blessing for us; it’s a necessity.
Who are you? You’re not just a human. You bear the image of almighty God. Of all the things spoken into existence, you are one of the brightest, one of the most beautiful. And that has everything to do with how God made you, not with what you can do or say or be on your own. If Jesus is the most beautiful Word God ever uttered (John 1:1), then you and I are echoes of that eternal beauty. We’re made to commune with the God of grace and to commune with other creatures made in his image. We’re communion-seekers. We have that identity because God has spoken.
Why are you here? In short, to respond to God’s speech. God has uttered a world that always testifies to himself (Rom. 1:20; Ps. 19:1-4). But he’s also spoken directly to his creatures throughout history. And that unifying word is what we have in the Bible. the Bible is the speech of God that gives purpose to the people of God. That purpose is to walk in his shadow, giving ourselves to others in love and self-sacrifice. In so doing, we become closer to the God we long for.
Where are you going? Eventually, we’re going to a fellowship of unending communion with God and those who love him. Peace. Beauty. Glory. Abundance. Passion. Holy joy. These are the things in store for us. But these things mean nothing if detached from the person of God. As I read recently in an article by Jonny Gibson, heaven is a beautiful place because it’s inhabited by a beautiful person. We’re going to him, not simply going to a place. And we have that destiny in God’s speech (John 14:3).
We need God’s speech to answer these “big questions” of life. Praise God that he has spoken, and that he’s given us ears to hear it!
Have you checked out The Great Lie yet? It’s been encouraging people to embrace God’s presence in all of life.
